Week 9 - Chapter 6

The chapter explores the connected themes of ethics and privacy, particularly in the context of information technology (IT) and corporate settings. It introduces various ethical frameworks like utilitarianism, rights, fairness, and common good approaches, providing guidance on making ethical decisions.

Chapter 6 is about making good choices and keeping people's information safe, especially in technology and businesses. It explains different ways to decide what's right, like thinking about what's best for everyone. For example, it might be like deciding to help a lot of people even if it's hard. It also talks about the rules that companies make for their employees to follow and being responsible for our actions. An example could be if someone at work has to decide whether to tell the truth even if it's difficult. The text also mentions laws that protect people's personal information, like when a company can't share your bank details without your permission. It also talks about worries about things like being watched electronically and privacy on the internet. For instance, when companies track what websites their employees visit online.

Finally, it discusses how companies should respect people's privacy and give them choices about how their information is used. An example would be if a company asks if they can use your email to send you ads, and you can say yes or no. Overall, the chapter underscores the evolving landscape of ethics and privacy in the digital era, emphasizing the importance of ethical decision-making and safeguarding privacy.
