Week 7 - Chapter 4

Chapter 4 of the material provides an extensive overview of network fundamentals. It begins by explaining the difference between analogue and digital signals, where analogue signals are continuous waves, and digital signals are discrete pulses representing binary data. The role of modems in translating between these signals is discussed, emphasizing their importance in facilitating communication across different types of networks.

The chapter then explores various communication media, including cable and broadcast, outlining their advantages and disadvantages. Twisted-pair wire, coaxial cable, and fibre-optic cable are examined in detail, each with its unique characteristics and applications. Subsequently, the chapter delves into network protocols, focusing on Ethernet and Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), elucidating their functions and layers and highlighting their significance in enabling reliable data transmission.

Lastly, the chapter examines types of network processing, such as client/server computing and peer-to-peer processing, providing insights into their applications and functionalities. Overall, Chapter 4 offers a comprehensive foundation in network fundamentals, covering key concepts, technologies, and protocols essential for understanding modern networking systems.
