Week 4 - Chapter 2

Information systems can give an advantage over competitors in the face of a variety of business challenges, as discussed in Chapter 2. With a focus on social responsibility and globalization, it addresses market, technological, and societal forces.

Customer focus, e-commerce activities, and strategic systems are examples of organizational responses. Using models such as Michael Porter's value chain and competitive forces. And this competitive advantage is achieved through cost leadership, differentiation, innovation, operational effectiveness, and customer orientation. Michael Porter's competitive forces model and value chain model are used to analyze competitiveness and design strategies.

Business and IT managers have different goals, which is one of the problems highlighted in the necessity of business-IT alignment. All things considered, the chapter emphasizes that in order to succeed as an organization, cooperation, comprehension of business demands, and the application of strategic information systems are necessary. It points out that business managers and IT managers have different aims, which causes problems when they need to work together.

However, it stresses that for a company to do well, everyone needs to cooperate and understand what the business needs. It's like teamwork: if everyone works together and understands the game plan, the team has a better chance of winning. Additionally, using smart computer systems that fit with the company's goals is really important.

The chapter talks about how important it is for the computer systems in a company to match up with what the company wants to achieve. But it's a bit worrying because only a small number about 16% of executives say this is working well. They say it's because the people in charge of computers and the people in charge of the business have different goals and don't talk enough. The chapter says it's really important for the computer systems to help the company reach its goals and to use smart computer systems to deal with changes in the market. Overall, it says the company needs to make sure everyone is working together toward the same goals. So, the chapter is saying that for a company to be successful, all the different parts of the company need to work together and understand each other's roles.
